Health and Wellness: Why Beauty Sleep Might Not Be a Myth
Sleep is essential for a person’s health and well-being. Getting enough sleep every night is just as important as nutrition, exercise and stress management. The phrase “Beauty Sleep” is no longer a ploy to convince to you sleep more, it turns out that people who get more sleep, actually look more attractive, healthy and less tired, according to a recent study in the British Medical Journal.
The study occurred in Sweden where 23 healthy adults from ages 18 to 31 were first photographed after eight hours of sleep, wearing no makeup. The same adults were photographed again after sleeping only five hours and being kept awake for a full 31 hours, with the same lighting and camera settings. The photos were then placed in random order and rated by 65 untrained observers.
The findings confirmed that sleep deprived people appear less healthy, less attractive and more tired than well rested people. A lack of sleep can cause dark circles under your eyes and puffiness. While we are always striving to make the best decisions for our health, one easy and necessary measure could be to just go to bed and get a good night’s sleep.
